Mens’ volleyball coaching changes announced at Douglas, UBC, and TRU.

Post-secondary volleyball competition in BC will be welcoming new faces at the Mens’ head coaching helm for the 2016-2017 season:

CANADA WEST CONFERENCE

UBC MVB Kerry MacDonaldUBC Men’s volleyball program and coach Richard Schick have parted ways after thirteen seasons together. Schick, who held a career record of 174-142 at UBC, was key in developing many athletes who have gone through to the junior and senior national team program, including current Rio 2016 bound Team Canada libero, Blair Bann. Replacing Schick is long-time assistant coach and consultant for the Calgary Dinos men’s volleyball program, Kerry MacDonald.

Macdonald’s coaching credentials includes assisting with both National Teams’ full time training centre and with the Youth National Team program, along with over a decade of head coaching experience at the club level in Alberta – winning several provincial and national titles. MacDonald, a native of Revelstoke, BC, holds a Master in Coaching and is currently studying for his PhD in Sports Injury Prevention.

mike hawkins truA new interim head coach will running the sidelines for Thompson Rivers University. Pat Hennelly, who has coached ten seasons since TRU’s introduction to CIS action, has decided to take a year’s leave for professional development.

Taking over will be former WolfPack athlete Mike Hawkins, who recently spent the last two seasons coaching (14′-15′ as Assistant, 15′-16′ as Head) with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks of the Alberta College Athletic Conference. Hawkins won ACAC and CCAA Championships with Mount Royal as an athlete. At 26, Hawkins will be the youngest head coach in the Canada West Conference. He will also be coaching with Canada’s Youth National selects team In Kingston, Ontario in July.

PACWEST CONFERENCE

jay tremonti - douglas collegeIn the PacWest Conference, former 2015 CCAA Coach of The Year, Brad Hudson has stepped down after eleven seasons with the Douglas College Royals, appearing in multiple conference finals for the program. Coming in will be recent graduate from the University of Toronto Jay Tremonti. Hailing from Dryden, Ontario, Tremonti finished his degree in Kinesiology while competing five years of CIS action for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. He is also currently the Technical Advisor for Seaside Volleyball Club, where he recently coached his 16U boys team to provincial gold.
