REFEREE

Referees are an integral part of volleyball and their involvement makes it possible for Volleyball BC to run professional, structured, and fair tournaments. For many people, refereeing is a way to stay involved in the sport, whether they are currently playing, retired from playing, or just have a passion for volleyball. Volleyball BC has referees in all areas of the province and works with over 300+ referees each year at over 200 tournaments.

*NEW* – We are excited to launch a new Outstanding Student Referee Award in 2026!  We will be giving out four $1,000 awards to exemplary individuals. Please click here for more information and to apply.

The Recreational and Local Referees clinic is designed for students, teachers, players, coaches, and parents interested in refereeing junior high school matches and introductory tournaments. This is an ideal way to begin your refereeing career by refereeing U12/16 volleyball during the club season. We have now reduced our minimum age to 14 years old, so come get involved!

  • The theory session can be one day or can be spread over 2-4 evenings. Sessions can be online or in person.

PRACTICAL EVALUATION

  • Observation will be provided while candidates perform all roles of refereeing in a match/tournament situation. Minimum for completion is 2-R1 assignments, 2-R2 assignments, 1 completed scoresheet, and the written exam (open book).
  • The practical session will take place at a tournament provided for within the candidates’ zone.
