Important Update: Beach Leagues & Clinics at Spanish Banks

February 26, 2024

Dear Volleyball BC members and participants:

Volleyball BC has run beach leagues at Spanish Banks for nearly 30 years, providing high-quality volleyball programs to nearly 40,000 participants over this time. These leagues provide important revenue that we use to directly support investment in programs, services, and activities that benefit the volleyball community and beyond –  including youth programming, beach volleyball tournaments, and the hugely-popular Vancouver Open.

Unfortunately, Volleyball BC was recently informed by the Vancouver Park Board that they are taking away a permit on Monday nights and that additional permits may be taken away in future years. For now, this impacts around 450 individuals who no longer have a league or clinic on Monday night, and 3,000-4,000 participants in our remaining adult programs who will face a price increase. If the Park Board take more permits, this will jeopardize our ability to run the beach volleyball programs and activities that are so important to our community and that so many people enjoy.

Needless to say, we are incredibly disappointed with this decision, and we are engaging with the Park Board and City Council to seek a path towards a more mutually agreeable approach.

As a member of the broader Volleyball BC community, we are reaching out to inform you of this concerning decision, and to ask for your help. You can help by letting the Park Board and the City know that you don’t support the Park Board’s decision.

Thank you for your help, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
