High Performance Director to focus on personal training business

For the last 6 years Chris Berglund has served as the High Performance Director for Volleyball BC. He has been responsible for the growth and development of the High Performance and Coaching Programs province wide. It’s Chris’ passion in strength and conditioning that has him moving in a different direction. His personal training business, Iceberg Fitness, is growing and is demanding more of his attention.

During his time at Volleyball BC, Chris has worked extensively on the Team BC Programs, Baden Cup, and the National Coaching Certification Program. Chris explains in his own words some of the high points of his time with Volleyball BC, “The 17U/16U and 14U Baden Cups have been some of my favourite projects over the past 5 summers. Seeing the athletes develop from the 14U Baden Cup to current CIS/CCAA stars is so rewarding and this direct interaction with athletes will be missed. Last year’s success in our Team BC program is a great example of the dedication our coaches and athletes have had over the years. Winning 8 medals, (3 gold) out of a possible 10, is a great accomplishment.”

Chris’ love of coaching and instructing has been apparent in the NCCP program. “My real love is the instruction and mentoring of athletes and coaches to become the best they can be at their craft. In my 6 years here, I am most proud of bringing back the Annual Volleyball BC Coaching Symposium. January saw over 150 coaches attend this event. This made me really proud to represent Volleyball BC, and another testament this province coaches’s desire for professional development.”

Chris will now start focusing on the direct training of his clients in one-on-one and small group settings. Based in the Kitsilano area, Iceberg Fitness will be strong presence in not only the fitness community, but in the community as well. “While most personal trainers focus on physical characteristics I’ve developed a program that builds upon the individual needs of each client depending on their own passion, physical abilities, and long term goals. I will still maintain my head coaching role at Crofton House School in Vancouver, so my involvement with volleyball will still be there. I’m going to miss the role of Technical / High Performance Director for Volleyball BC but luckily my personal training business and coaching will have strong cross over to volleyball so I’ll continue to get to work with athletes and coaches in the sport.”

Volleyball BC would like to thank Chris Berglund for his years of service to the organization.  We wish Chris all the best and know that he will still be involved in our sport helping to develop athletes and coaches.  Moving forward, Volleyball BC is slightly changing the direction of the Technical Director position to become more of a management/leadership position as High Performance Director.  The same duties will exist, but the position will be responsible for supervising all of the technical staff within the organization.  We are looking for someone who has a strong technical background as well as leadership abilities.  For anyone interested, please see our careers page for the attached job description and posting.
