Vancouver Island High School Beach Open breaks one-day beach tournament record

It was a record year for the Island High School Open at Parksville Beach in 2014 with 134 teams registered for the event through 8 divisions; the previous record for the number of teams was 96. These 134 teams represented the largest one-day beach volleyball tournament in the history of Vancouver Island. The island had a great turnout with athletes representing schools from all over the region. Dover Bay Secondary of Nanaimo had the most teams registered (20), with Timberline Secondary of Campbell River being close behind (19). Dover Bay also had the most successful tournament, taking gold in three of the eight divisions.

The winners of the grade 6/7 girls division were Georgia Veale, Cameron Christison, and Mia Barber representing the Comox Valley. In the grade 8 girls division Savannah Purdy and Olivia Godek took home the gold for Spencer Middle School. The winners of the grade 9 girls division were Maddie Yule and Paige Lawson representing Brooks Secondary School. Amy Smith and Sam Chwelos of Dover Bay won gold in the grade 10 girls division.

In the girls senior division, Kelsey Hutt and Shelby Dorman-Banks won gold representing Cedar Community Secondary School. Zacharias Monckton and Ki-Sang Lee of Royal Oak won the grade 7/8 boys division. In the grade 9/10 boys division it was Jeff Webb and Nathan Ziemanski of Dover Bay coming in first. Lastly, in the boys senior division, it was Robbie Calvin and Wes Richardson of Dover Bay capturing gold.

 

Parksville HS Beach Open
