#ThanksCoach Dahl!

In light of #NationalCoachesWeek, we sat down with Volleyball BC’s Director of Coach Development, Chris Dahl.

Coaching has been long-standing in the life of Chris Dahl. His accolades include North Regional Coach, Island Regional Coach, and Team BC coach for over a decade. He has also been involved with the Team Canada Girls Youth National Development Program and the Women’s Junior National Team. To add to his shining resume, Chris was named Coach of the year in the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2014-2015.

In his current role as Director of Coach Development, Chris is responsible for the organization and administration of NCCP programming, coach mentorship guidance, coach education and resource development, LTAD and VCDM education.

Q: What is the impact of coaching in the lives of children, youth, and growing athletes?

Dahl: I feel that coaching is a pillar in our communities. You’re not coaching unless you’re interacting with people, and people will always be a worthwhile investment of our time and energy. Second… there’s no greater and more deserving population to invest in than the youth in our communities. Understanding this speaks to the importance of well-trained and prepared coaches in our province. I don’t know many people that aren’t interested in being better in the service of others.

Q: How has coaching played a role in your life?

Dahl: Coaching has provided me with the greatest opportunity for personal growth and development. I believe that the experiences I’ve shared, which include both successes and mistakes, have made me a better father, husband, neighbour… and vice versa. This process is ongoing and continues to this very day.

Q: What is the significance of celebrating “National Coaches Week”?

Dahl: The significance of National Coaches Week is tied into my belief that coaches are one of the pillars of healthy, vibrant communities. The National Coaches Week initiative helps build awareness of the role of the coach by identifying and promoting the incredible value and impact of competent coaches in Canada. Further, I’m a huge fan of the #ThanksCoach movement as it also promotes reflection and gratitude: Practices that we should all connect with on a regular basis in our lives.

National Coaches Week is a time for us all to acknowledge, appreciate, and celebrate the huge impact that coaches have on athletes and communities. Be sure to take the time to say #ThanksCoach to your favourite teacher, trainer, and inspirational leader!
