Sport BC Athlete of the Year Awards

Volleyball athletes were honored with a number of nominations at the Sport BC 48th Annual Athlete of the Year Awards. However, it was Victoria native and UBC alumni, Shanice Marcelle, who took home top honors – see story below.

High School Athlete: Emma Entzminger (Victoria, BC) – Volleyball, Basketball, Softball and Soccer (Lambrick Park)

High School Athlete: Lars Bornemann (Victoria, BC) – Volleyball, Basketball and Track & Field (Oak Bay)

Team: Megan & Nicole McNamara (Delta, BC) – Beach Volleyball

 

UBC women’s volleyball player Shanice Marcelle was named the University Athlete of the Year, in recognition of the Victoria native’s outstanding achievements in 2013, which included the following awards: the Jim Thompson Trophy at the BLG Awards as the top university female athlete in Canada, the Mary Lyons Award as the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Player of the Year and the Canada West Most Valuable Player honour. Marcelle won her fifth consecutive national championship with UBC in 2013.

In the summer, Marcelle continued playing with the senior women’s national volleyball team and was the flag bearer for Canada at the opening ceremonies of the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia.

“I’d like to congratulate all the nominees on such outstanding achievements, and I just want to thank my teammates, the coaching staff and the staff of UBC Athletics for all the work and dedication they put into the women’s volleyball program to make it an incredible five-year journey for me,” said Marcelle from Germany, where she is currently in her first season as a professional player.
