College Provincial Championship Results

If you live in the Fraser Valley or Lower Mainland this past weekend was a special treat. The top College teams from BC as well as the best University teams from Western Canada were playing for a chance to compete in their respective National Championships. The result was three days of fantastic volleyball for spectators to enjoy. 

PacWest Women’s Recap: On Thursday the Quarter-Finals took place at 1pm & 6pm. #4 Camosun Chargers fought a tough back and forth battle to beat #5 CBC Bearcats 8-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-20, 15-9. Later in the day the host school #3 Capilano Blues beat #6 Douglas Royals in their own gym, 25-14, 25-23,25-22. On Friday, the semi finals took place and the competition heated up. At 1pm the #3 Capilano Blues beat the #2 UFV Cascades 25-19, 25-23, 25-23. The Blues made good use of home court advantage to cause the upset. At 6pm #1 VIU Mariners ensured they held on to the top seed and beat the #4 Camosun Chargers 25-14, 25-17, 25-21. On Saturday the Bronze Medal match featured an epic 5 set battle between #2 UFV Cascades and #4 Camosun Chargers 25-22, 13-25, 25-22, 22-25, 16-14. The Camosun Chargers prevailed and won the PacWest Women’s Volleyball 2014 Bronze Medal. At 5:30pm the #1 VIU Mariners proved why they came into this tournament ranked at the top. The Mariners prevailed over the Blues 27-25, 25-17, 25-16 to win the PacWest Women’s Volleyball 2014 Gold Medal. However, both teams will travel to Seneca College in Toronto, ON to compete at the CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championships March 6-8, 2014.

 

PacWest Men’s Recap: The Quarter-Finals took place on Thursday at 3pm & 8pm. First up, the #3 Douglas Royals were challenged by #6 VIU Mariners but ultimately prevailed to win 25-23, 25-13, 21-25,24-26,15-10. The last match of the night featured the home team #4 Capilano Blues and #5 College of the Rockies Avalanche. The Blues fought hard but fell to the Avs who took the match 25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 26-24. The Semi-Finals really separated the top teams from the rest. At 3pm #3 Douglas Royals beat #2 Camosun Chargers 25-21, 25-15, 25-21 and at 8pm the #1 CBC Bearcats beat #5 COTR Avalanche 25-18, 25-20, 25-19. On the final day of competition the fans were treated to two excellent matches. The Bronze Medal match featured #5 Avalanche and the #2 Chargers. The match went to extra points in the fifth and deciding set 14-25,25-19, 17-25, 25-21, 18-16 with the COTR Avs prevailing to win the PacWest Men’s Volleyball 2014 Bronze Medal. In the final match of the tournament the Douglas Royals beat the CBC Bearcats in four sets 22-25,25-17,25-16,25-21. Both teams earned a berth to National Championships at Briercrest College in Moose Jaw, SK March 5-8, 2014. The PacWest Men’s 2014 Gold Medals were awarded to the Douglas Royals.
