Grenfell and Selkirk win big at 2013 Elementary School tournament!

Fourteen Elementary school teams headed to Harry Jerome Sports Centre this Sunday for the annual Volleyball BC Elementary School tournament. With plenty of chances to win prizes including a serving competition at lunchtime, it was a fun-packed day of volleyball with a great standard of play on display.

In the Boys’ competition, the teams were very competitive with several tight sets in the early pool play stages. Grenfell (Vancouver) won a narrow game against the Sunshine Coast’s Robert’s Creek by just 2 points to head into the playoffs in first place. In the playoffs, Surrey’s Old Yale Road Elementary reversed their loss earlier in the day against St Bernadette’s (also Surrey) to take 3rd place, 25-20, 25-19. In the Gold medal game Grenfell won an extremely tight first set, 26-24 against Roberts Creek before cruising to a second set victory of 25-15 to take 1st place.

On the Girls’ side of the draw, top seeds SAS Phantoms and Selkirk 1 stayed strong in the pool play stages, both winning all their sets to top Pool A and B. Ecole du Pacifique (Sechelt) and Sting Purple (Burnaby) also started well, with their point’s differences putting them through to the Tier 1 Playoffs. SAS and Selkirk continued their perfect records, despatching their semi-final opponents and a forfeit from Ecole du Pacifique handed Sting Purple the bronze spot. In the final Selkirk 1 started strong and didn’t let up, emerging the overall winners, 25-19, 25-15.

In Tier 2, some of our younger teams showed their potential with some fantastic rallies keeping the spectators on the edge of their seats. In the semi-finals Our Lady of Mercy 7s just overcame their Grade 6 counterparts in three sets to set up a final with Selkirk 2 who won a nervy second set 26-24 against Sting Purple. Selkirk 2 then completed a good day’s work for their squads, taking home the Tier 2 title and making it a double for the Vancouver based school.

Well done to all the teams that took part and a big thank you to the coaches and parent for their support on the day!
