#BCSportConference ’17: 2x Olympic Women’s Volleyball Coach on The Right Kind of Feedback.

Burnaby, BC (Tuesday, November 15, 2016)

The 3rd Annual BC Sport Conference is coming to Burnaby, BC for January 14th 2017, but you don’t have to be a sports minded learner to get something out of this unique experience.  Two-time Olympic Women’s Volleyball Assistant Coach for Team USA, Tom Black, will be just one of the keynote speakers sharing his knowledge with future leaders in the New Year.

“Guiding and giving appropriate feedback applies to all sports and leaders everywhere,” says Black.

“During that process we should be learning about our student-athletes to better offer that feedback. It’s a process that benefits both parties.”

Black is part way through his 7th season as the Head Coach of the Women’s Volleyball program at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California where his team sits third in the West Coast Conference. The transition back to the collegiate level from the international game is a big step but it’s an experience that Black knows will help his overall coaching.

“Anytime you go up a level the level of investment is higher,” Black stated.

“It doesn’t matter what sport or discipline you’re in those themes are relatable. Your questions to your student-athletes can get a little more nuanced because you’re guiding different pressures.”

Even after almost a decade of coaching, and over 100 wins with LMU Black is still learning and perfecting his craft,

“Just learn,” Black expressed, “It’s okay that you don’t know it all. Especially when you’re a passionate young coach and you want to be good so bad, you feel you have to give off this image that you know it all and that you’re great already, you have to take a step back and really dive into learning and be okay with mistakes. It’s probably the biggest piece of advice I would have given myself if I could have.”
