Adult Provincial Championships a battle of universities, colleges, clubs, and stamina

This past weekend the Adult Tier I / II Provincial Championships took place at UBC in Vancouver. All matches for the championships took place on one day, which truly tested the stamina and conditioning of the attending teams.

The women’s competition was a mix of current and alumni university teams with up and coming 18U club teams also taking part. The tier 2 final saw the young Force team from Surrey beat the SFU club team. The tier 1 final was a back and forth matchup in which the UBC alumni beat a young UBC T-Birds squad 25-18, 15-25, 15-09.

The men’s competition was tight, with the same mix of a current and ex-university teams as well as young club teams. The tier 2 final was a battle of youth versus experience with the Grumpy Middle Aged Men defeating RCVC 25-19, 25-18. In tier 1, the top three spots were secured by CIS level teams. In the bronze medal match, TWU (aka Smash Bros) beat a collection of former college players (PacBest) 25-22, 24-26, 15-13. In the gold medal match, UBC played UBC-O (aka KVC Heat) in a campus showdown. The UBC team (J-BIRDS) took the match 25-22, 25-18 on home court.

Perhaps the closest match of the tournament was the Men’s tier 2 bronze medal match in which Team Next Year beat Attack 18U 25-21, 22-25, 20-18. Some fantastic volleyball was played this past weekend and if you missed it this year, make sure to mark it in your calendar for March 2015.
