Monday Morning Post Secondary Volleyball Recap

The post secondary volleyball season is in full swing with a number of teams playing this past weekend. Here is a brief recap of how some of B.C.’s teams fared this weekend.

Simon Fraser University dropped a game to the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Thursday night, but made quick work on the Alaska Nanooks in three sets (25-13, 25-13, 25-12) on Saturday afternoon.

SFU posted this on their website, “Junior outside hitter Kirsten Pinkney led the kill-count with 13, just one more than senior middle blocker Tessa May, who had 12 to go along with five blocks. Sophomore Julia Tays was once again reliable at setter with 40 assists, while libero Jamie Bratsburg and defensive specialist Katerina Dolguikh tied for the most digs with 10 each”

TWU/TRU

In Kamloops, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s team kicked off their preseason against the power-house, Trinity Western University Spartans.

The Spartans prevailed in three sets, 25-21, 25-19, 27-25.

Post match, Spartan head coach, Ben Josephson had this to say:

“I was pleased with the result. I really didn’t know what we were going to see tonight, so I was quite pleased with many aspects. And I’m really excited about the notes we made on the aspects we want to work on next week. One of priorities over the last two weeks was defence and I thought that was one of the better defensive performances we’ve seen from our program in a number of years. The guys have really bought into that style of play and it was a lot of fun for everybody and fun for me to watch.

I think the WolfPack are going to be really strong this year, so kicking off the season with a win against a good team is fun. But kicking off the season by watching our team’s application of preparation is what pleased me the most.”

Saturday night was a different story for the Spartans, as the WolfPack won in four sets, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 24-16.

TWU Women’s Team

On the women’s side of things, the Spartans women’s team was in Regina for the University of Regina Invitational. The Spartans went 5-0 at the event, knocking off Brandon University, Manitoba University, Alberta University, Saskatchewan University and Regina University.

Post tournament, Spartans head coach Ryan Hofer had this to say:

“It was a strong ending to a long weekend of volleyball. We were feeling a lot of exhaustion and we’re learning to work through that and just play a game in which we can still play our best even though we’re not feeling 100 per cent. We’re going to be in situations like this at times in the season, so it’s important to experience these types of moments early in the year. I’m proud of the team and I’m very proud of how our team fought through some adverse situations and learned to play together with a variety of lineups.”

PACWEST

In PACWEST action, Douglas College’s Women’s Team hosted the Pacific Challenge. This event saw them play, Briercrest, Capilano and VIU.
