Gold and Silver at 2015 Western Canada Summer Games

The Western Canada Summer Games in Wood Buffalo, Alberta, wrapped up on Sunday, August 16th, 2015.  Team BC had a strong showing with 2 gold medals for our girls programs (beach and indoor) and 2 silver medals for our boys programs (beach and indoor).

The women’s beach volleyball team of Quinci Birker (South Surrey) and Darby Dunn (Kelowna) played Alberta in the gold medal match, winning  21-12 and 21-15.  Their brothers and men’s beach volleyball team, Liam Birker and Devon Dunn, had to settle for silver losing to Alberta in 2 sets 21 -13 and 21-19.

Team BC indoor women’s volleyball played Team Alberta in the gold medal match at the Western Canada Summer Games. Team BC won in 3 sets (25-22, 25-19, 25-17).  The men’s volleyball team also faced off against Team Alberta in the gold medal match. The match was tight throughout all three sets but Team Alberta took the match 3-0 with the set scores of 25-22, 25-23, 27-25.

Team BC had ten fantastic days in the Wood Buffalo Region and was awarded the Western Canada Summer Games trophy.  This trophy is awarded to the team with the highest aggregate points, and Team BC has won the trophy at every Games since the inception of the Western Canada Summer Games in 1975.

A huge thank you to the amazing coaches that worked with the Team BC Beach and Indoor programs all summer!  The Team BC beach coaches were Kyra Iannone and Chris Denmore.  The Team BC indoor women’s staff was lead by head coach Ashley Shannik, Dan Huzar and Spencer Reed and the Team BC indoor men’s coaches were head coach Chris Berglund, Travis McClellan and Zack Lund.
