VBC’s 15U Zone Championships 2015

This past weekend (July 18-19th) athletes from across the province competed in the 2015 Zone Championships. This is part of our 15U Team BC program for male and female athletes. This program also imitates the BC Summer Games on the off year the games are not hosted. Each athlete tries out for an elite team within their “zone”. The province is split up into 8 zones (to see all zones click here). Once the athletes were selected (around the beginning of June) they trained within their zone leading up to the Zone Championships.

This year the Zone Championships were hosted in Burnaby, BC. The girls tournament was almost fully represented by all zones aside from Zone 1 (Kootenays). This allowed Zone 3 (Fraser Valley) to submit a second team. The boys tournament was a bit smaller and had 4 teams compete (Zone 2, 3, 4, 5). The athletes kicked off the event by attending the opening banquet hosted by Volleyball BC at the Executive Suites Hotel & Conference Centre in Burnaby on Friday, July 17th. At this banquet athletes were able to interact with all other athletes, compete in friendly cup stacking competition, take part in volleyball related trivia, and receive a visit from Joanne Ross who spoke on future high performance volleyball.

The actual tournament ran on Saturday and Sunday (July 18-19). Athletes fought through the intense heat provided by the Harry Jerome Sports Centre to complete pool play the first day and one round of playoff for the girls side. On Sunday, playoffs commenced with the finals wrapping up by 2:30pm. For a second year in a row Zone 3 (Fraser Valley) walked away with the gold medal for both boys and girls teams. Overall, the event was a great success with some of the highest level of 15U volleyball our programs have seen in a while. Athletes born in the year 2000 can look forward to participating in the 16U Baden Cup and Team BC next summer! All info on our 16U Team BC programs can be found here (Female) and here (male). See below for pictures from the tournament. The whole album is below or can also be seen by clicking here.

Next summer, the BC Summer Games are being hosted in Abbotsford! The games play host to 2 sports for Volleyball: 15U Indoor Volleyball and 17U Beach Volleyball. PLEASE NOTE: After a long process – the BC Games Society has realigned Zones 3, 4, and 5. Volleyball BC will adopt all new zone boundaries. Click here for all information on the “new” zone boundaries.
