Volleyball BC Announces New Chief Executive Officer

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Volleyball BC is pleased to announce the hiring of Emma Gibbons as the new Chief Executive Officer for the organization. “Volleyball BC is thrilled to have Emma joining us,” states Volleyball BC President, Boris Tyzuk. “She brings considerable experience in leadership, finance, operational planning and management in the non-profit and sport sectors.”

Emma comes most recently from the sport of field hockey, where she served as the Executive Director for West Vancouver Field Hockey Club, the largest club in Canada with over 2000 members.  At WVFHC, Emma was responsible for the operational and strategic leadership of the club with a focus on building relationships with members, Field Hockey BC, Field Hockey Canada and other sport partners.  Prior to WVFHC, Emma worked for five years for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the areas of government and partner relations, dignitary operations, and as the Director of the CEO Office. She currently sits on one of viaSport BC’s grant committees and is involved in several physical literacy partnerships with Sport for Life Canada.

“I am thrilled to be joining Volleyball BC at such an exciting time for the sport. I am passionate about the role that sport plays in creating opportunities for everyone to be active and Volleyball BC is a natural leader in this area.  The reputation of Volleyball BC – and the volleyball community – is outstanding and I am looking forward to working with everyone to continue to develop and grow the sport in BC,” says Emma.

Over the past eight years, Volleyball BC has grown significantly in membership and in the size and scope of programs and events delivered by the staff.  The organization currently has 14 full-time employees as well as additional part-time and seasonal staff who are passionate about the sport and all that Volleyball BC does for the community.   Supporting the staff and the overall organization is a dedicated board of directors who bring their expertise and skills to help develop the sport.

Emma will commence as CEO on September 16th, 2019.  As Volleyball BC comes to the end of the current strategic plan, one of Emma’s first responsibilities will be to engage with the entire community to seek input into the future direction of the organization.  Boris Tyzuk comments, “Emma’s planning experience is most welcome as Volleyball BC looks to create its next strategic plan this fall.  The organization will benefit from Emma’s experience and perspectives from her time with both VANOC and field hockey.” With an experienced and knowledgeable team behind her, Emma is well-positioned to step into the organization and lead it into its next phase of development.  “I am excited to meet, learn and hear from all the members of Volleyball BC,” says Emma. “Working collaboratively, we can develop a new plan for building and strengthening the sport across BC.”
