VBC mourns Hall of Fame inductee Marilyn Pomfret

The Volleyball BC community is saddened by the loss of Marilyn Pomfret—an influential leader in sport and our 2018 Hall of Fame inductee for the role of Builder.

As a UBC student from 1951-54, Marilyn became part of its Physical Education Undergraduate Society, Women’s Athletic Directorate, BC Women’s Undergraduate Society Council and UBC Student Council. She returned to UBC as its Women’s Athletic Director from 1963-69 and 1972-86 and led its women’s wolleyball team to two Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) National Titles in 1972-73 and 1973-74. She also established the Canadian Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Union and would help combine it with the CIAU (now U Sports).

In addition to Marilyn’s accomplishments at UBC, she also founded the BC High School Girls Volleyball Tournament, Vancouver Women’s Volleyball League and the BC Volleyball Association (now Volleyball BC). She was also inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and BC Sports Hall of Famen in 2004.
