The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s volleyball team are back on the winning track. The Pack went into Saskatoon and dumped the host University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 in Canada West play on Friday (Nov 29).The victory puts the WolfPack at 2-7 on the season while Saskatchewan falls to 5-6.
The scores were 221-25,25-21,31-29,20-25,15-7.
Sam Taylor Parks (5th year, middle, Kelowna, BC) led the attack for Thompson Rivers with 18 kills. Charlie Bringloe (5th year, outside, Waterloo , ON had 12 kills while rookie Nemo Benne (1st year, outside hitter, Netherlands) added 10 to go along with two service aces, two blocks and six digs. Kyle Behiels (5th year, middle, Edmonton, AB) had a team leading seven blocks and two service aces.
Anton Napolitano (4th year, setter, Victoria, AUS) had 28 assists and nine digs. Sam Elgert ( 2nd year, setter, Athabasca, AB) contributed 23. Landon Currie (3rd year, setter, Vernon, BC) had 10 digs.
Saskatchewan was led by Dylan Mortenson who had a team high 22 kills, two blocks ,two service aces and four digs. Aidan Saladana and Daulton Sinoski each had ten kills. Sinoski added two service aces.
CJ Gavlas had 43 assists and 12 digs while Matthew Primrose had 13 digs and six assists.
WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly stated, ” It was a barnburner. We played some different guys. Sam Elgert started setting and played great. Anton came in and was solid for us as well. Kyle Behiels and Dylan VanSpankaren (1st year, Calgary, AB) really served well in the fifth set. Overall, a gritty effort from all the guys especially Nimo Benne and Josh Mullaney (4th year, outside hitter, Calgary, AB) on the outside. Was a battle and the guys hung in at the tough moments.”
The two teams will go at it again on Saturday (Nov 30) in Saskatoon. It is a 3 PM PDT start. It’s the final match for both teams before the Christmas break.
