Team BC 2017 Summer Recap – Canada Games, National Team Challenge Cup and Baden Cup

Team BC 14U Baden Cup

It was the first exposure to the Team BC high-performance pathway for the 14U athletes.  Athletes first had to be selected from their regional tryouts before attending the 4-day Team BC training camp. 160 total BC athletes trained at Spanish Banks Beach, and at the Richmond Olympic Oval!

 

Team BC 15U – HP Championships

The high-performance program in which selected athletes train within their respective regions/zones. 8 Zone teams totaling 180 BC athletes trained from June and competed in the Zone Championships in July at the Harry Jerome Sports Centre, Volleyball BC’s main facility.

Team BC 16U – Baden Cup/NTCCs/Team BC Beach

16U Team BC is an athlete’s first experience of being selected to a Provincial team that competes against other provinces in Canada. 270 BC athletes tried out within their regions before being selected to the 120-athlete Baden Cup in Kelowna, where after more tryouts, 4 teams (60 athletes) are selected to compete at the National Team Challenge Cup. Team BC Beach high-performance camp occurred in late July, where selected athletes trained and competed at the Seaside Volleyball Tournament in Seaside, Oregon. Team BC Boys placed overall 2nd, 3rd, and 6th of 15 teams, where Team BC Girls placed 5th, 9th, and 14th of 64 teams.

 

 

Team BC 18U -Volleyball BC Athletes Win 3 Medals at the 2017 Canada Summer Games


It wasn’t easy, but the 18U Boys managed to capture the Bronze Medal with a win over Quebec at the recent Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg, Man.

The boys jumped out to a quick lead, winning the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-23, but Quebec climbed back into the game, winning the third and fourth sets.

In the fifth and deciding set, B.C. squeaked out a 17-15 win, avenging an earlier round robin loss to Quebec in the process.
The 18U Girls had a tougher time at the Games, with the highlight being knocking off eventual Gold Medal winner Manitoba in the round robin.

Overall, they went 3-2 in the round robin and 2-0 in the placing round, beating Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec to finish seventh in the 12 team tournament.

On the beach, 20U Team BC athletes added two more medals to British Columbia’s medal haul.
The team of Jeff Webb and Isaac Bevis of Nanaimo, B.C. captured Gold in boys beach volleyball with a win over Nova Scotia (21-12, 18-21, 15-9).

On the girl’s side, the team of Quinci Birker, Kelowna, B.C. and Darby Taylor-Dunn, South Surrey, B.C. captured Bronze with a win over Nova Scotia (21-10, 21-14).

The purpose of the Team BC High Performance Programs is to identify, select and train a group of young athletes who have future National Team or Post-Secondary potential.  We offer the opportunity to train and represent Team BC at national competitions.

The Volleyball BC Team BC Programs work to advance volleyball talent and build a broader and stronger pipeline of athletes and coaches for our Canadian Olympic Teams. Team BC is the pathway for young athletes who aspire to reach the elite level and who dream to one day represent Canada on the National Men’s or Women’s Volleyball Team.
