Club Gecko victorious at 15U Season Opener!

Club Gecko have established themselves as strong championship contenders in 2013 with a convincing win in this weekend’s 15U Girls Season Opener! With 18 teams taking part, it was a busy opener featuring predominantly Lower Mainland teams but also with two visitors from the Island.

Club Gecko 15U – Tier 1 Winners

Easing through the first pool stages, Club Gecko were pushed to three sets by a hard hitting Focus Primo side in Power Pool play but ensured their route to the Tier 1 Gold play off.  On the other side of the draw in Pool BB, North Shore Stars White 15U were unfortunate to lose two very tight games to find themselves out of the running for T1 gold. Raincity Rush, having eased through their early morning pool games with clear margins emerged in 1st place in Pool BB to face Club Gecko in the T1 Gold match.  Staying on Court 1, where they had been successful all day – Club Gecko took the gold in straight sets.  After their fourth place finish at last year’s Provincials in the 14U age category, the squad will be definitely aiming for a medal in 2013!

Coquitlam Ducks 15U Janet - Tier 2 Winners

In Tier 2, Raincity again lost out in the final – this time with their Rage squad being defeated by Coquitlam Ducks Janet. The first set in particular was very close fought – with the teams going to 27 before it could be decided.  Tier 3 saw brand new club Hillcrest Velocity 15U in the final against CV Strikers – experience won out as the Island team took the victory 15-9 in the third.

At the end of the draw, 14U teams North Shore Stars Red and White ended a long day of tough volleyball with a 3 set battle against each other – Red emerging victorious. Playing in their own age category next weekend at the first 14U Spike League, these ambitious squads will be ones to watch.

The tournament saw the introduction of Wings Grill who will be providing the concession stand at all 2013 club tournaments hosted at Harry Jerome Sports Centre. Offering coffee, cold drinks, snacks, wings and hot food, Wings Grill proved to be extremely popular on their first visit and look forward to meeting more teams next week – this time with an even wider selection of food!

Also present were volleyball clothing specialists Nothing but Volleyball – check them out at both next weekend’s tournaments to find out more about their team discounts!
