Press Release:

Vancouver, Canada, July 15, 2013 – The ClearlyContacts.ca Beach Volleyball Open drew to a close on Sunday to bring an end to three days of exciting beach volleyball action at Kits Beach.

On the men’s side 2012 Canadian Olympian Josh Binstock and his partner, former U21 World Champion Sam Schachter added to their resumes with an impressive 2-0 win over Ontario’s Matt Zbyszewski and Jessie Lelliot.  It was Schachter’s 2nd Open victory, having won the same event last year with former teammate Maverick Hatch.   On the way to the final Schachter and Binstock defeated hometown favourites Maverick Hatch of Comox, BC and Jared Krause of Langley BC.

Meanwhile on the women’s side, Leah Allinger-Pezer and Liz Cordonier won the 2013 ClearlyContacts.ca Open title by defeating defeating Andrea Peterson and Kathleen Brownlee 2-0 in the gold medal match.  Earlier on Sunday morning, Allinger and Cordonier narrowly defeated upstarts Nicole and Megan McNamara.  The twin sisters, both 16 years of age and entering grade 11 this fall, were able to recover to claim the bronze medal shortly after their semi-final loss and will move on to represent BC at the Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

“It was a great tournament” said 2013 champion Josh Binstock, “the crowds were bigger than I have ever seen at Kits Beach.  My partner Sam deserves the credit for our victory as he made some great plays in the finals.”

Volleyball BC will host the Youth and Adult Beach Volleyball National Championships at Spanish Banks August 23-25 and many of the same players will be back looking for National supremacy.
