Update from the USA High Performance Championships in Ft Lauderdale, Florida.

Team BC’s record at the 2013 High Performance Championships in Florida currently sits at 1 win and 2 losses at the halfway point of pool play. On Day 1 of competition Team BC fell in straight sets to USA Select A1 3-0 (19-25, 18-25, 23-25). Team BC was lead on the scoresheet by veteran Krista Hogewoning (Delta, BC) with 12 points (9 kills, 3 aces) and Katie Wuttunee (North Vancouver) with 8 points (5 kills, 2 blocks and 1 service ace).

Day two action started early and featured a preview of the upcoming Canada Games as Team BC squared off against Team Alberta. Team BC dropped to 0-2 in the tournament after a 1-3 (19-25, 25-13, 16-25, 16-25) loss to their Canadian neighbours. Alessandra Gentile (Port Moody) led the squad from the rightside position with 16 points (14 kills, 2 aces)  in the match followed closely by Kaitlynn Given (Kelowna) with 15 points (12 kills, 3 aces) and Alyssa Wolf (Burnaby) contributing 13 points on 7 kills, 1 block and 5 service aces.

During their second match of the day Team BC found the win column against another Northern squad. In a match that lasted close to 2.5 hours Team BC prevailed over Quebec 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-10). Veronica Livingston (Kelowna) put up 14 points (11 kills, 1 block and 2 aces) and Katie Wuttunee had 13 (8 kills, 2 blocks, 3 aces).

“Our play in Florida thus far has been inconsistent at best. We seem to be fighting the ball a bit both from the service line and from the back of the court in the quality of our first contact. This makes it difficult to achieve any sense of flow in our game and sustained pressure on our opposition. To come out on top at present I think we’ll find ourselves in more situations like our match against Quebec… matches where we just have to grind it out. It’s a very blue collar approach to the game I suppose, but I think that’s just what we need as we continue to prepare for the Games in Sherbrooke.”  ~ Coach Chris Dahl

Pool play resumes on Day 3 at the High Performance Championships against Newfoundland at 10:15am (EDT) and USA Youth A1 White at 5:45pm (EDT). Both matches will be webcast live from Court 4 at: http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Volleyball/High-Performance/Indoor/HP-Championships/2013-HPCs
