Indoor Women 2nd, Men 3rd at Canada Games

Sherbrooke – The Team BC women claimed a much deserved silver medal at the recently concluded Canada Games after falling to Alberta in a tight 5 set battle 25-21. 25-13, 13-25, 20-25, 9-15.  Coach Dahl was extremely proud of his team.

In the semi-final British Columbia and Ontario faced off in a re-match of their last pool play match. This match resulted in much of the same, with BC punching their ticket to the final with a 25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21 win.

In the feature match of the night, an old rivalry was renewed as Ontario and Quebec faced-off in front of yet another sold out crowd. The match was a back and forth affair, with both teams looking poised to pull away from the other, but neither team was ever able to grab hold of the match. In the 5th and final set, the lead flip-flopped a few times, when Quebec grabbed it at 10-9, and never looked back, closing out the match with a 5 point run, 15-10.

Gold and Bronze medal matches broadcast schedule

The Team BC men won the bronze medal at the Canada Games after a decisive 3-1 victory over Team Ontario 25-14, 25-13, 19-25, 25-23.   Congratulations to the team and head coach Ben Josephson on a job well done!

TEAM BC Women’s Volleyball 5-0 After Pool Play

The Team BC women’s indoor volleyball team wrapped up three days of pool play with an undefeated record. Monday evening’s straight set victory over Ontario secured the number one seed in Pool D and advanced the team directly into the semi-finals on Wednesday August 7th at 5:30pm (EDT).

“The first phase of the Games has wrapped up and there isn’t a team in the tournament that doesn’t acknowledge the value of a day off and a direct berth to the semi-final that comes with winning your pool. Our athletes are now able to regenerate, reconnect with family and friends and as is unique to the Canada Games experience… support their fellow Team BC mates in competition.” – coach Dahl

Following is a recap of pool play…

Day 1 – Aug 3

Team BC def Saskatchewan 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-10)

Krista Hogewoning (Delta) – 17 points (14 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace)

“The Saskatchewan match was very important to us. Not only was it the first match of the Games for our crew, but it helps narrow the direction we take for the rest of pool play. Saskatchewan had the opportunity to play us big and definitely pressed us for the first two sets. We liked our response though and are already preparing to build upon day one’s performance.” – coach Dahl

Day 2 – Aug 4

Team BC def Yukon 3-0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-6)

Chelsea Tancon (Comox) – 10 points (6 kills, 4 aces)

Team BC def Alberta 3-1 (25-12, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18)

Chelsea Tancon (Comox) – 18 points (8 kills, 1 block, 9 aces)

Kristen Almhjell (Richmond) – 27 digs

“We came out today with a perfect balance of confidence and calmness. We had a game plan that we executed from the service line and we slowed down Alberta’s top hitters. Our support within the team and from the fans was awesome!” – Katie Wuttunee

Day 3 – Aug 5

Team BC def PEI 3-0 (25-6, 25-9, 25-8)

Alessandra Gentile (Port Moody) – 10 points (8 kills, 1 block, 1 ace)

Team BC def Ontario 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-20)

Katie Wuttunee (North Vancouver) – 19 points (12 kills, 6 blocks, 1 ace)

Kristen Almhjell (Richmond) – 20 digs

“I’m really proud of us and how we came together and played as a team. Our passion and love for each other and the game enabled us to play our style and come out on top.” – Krista Hogewoning

“Our athletes are doing a very good job of taking care of the things that are in their control. This provides a great foundation for the challenges and variables of competition. We’ve played some very good ball to date, yet strive for more. The team is only growing and it’s fun… definitely fun to be a part of and when something is fun… you want more.” – coach Dahl
