Beach Nationals kicks off in Parksville

For the next three days over 170 youth beach volleyball players will be in Parksville, BC for the 2014 Beach National Championships. Starting on Friday, teams aged 14 to 18 will be playing numerous matches in hopes of reaching Sunday’s gold medal rounds.

The Beach National Championships are being held at the beautiful Parksville Waterfront Community Park where 26 volleyball courts have been set up to accommodate the large tournament including a feature court with music, spectator seating, and live video stream.

Local Parksville businesses such as The Beach Club Resort have partnered with Volleyball BC and Volleyball Canada to accommodate the large number of participants and their families.

Teams will be competing in pool play rounds on Friday and Saturday, which will be used to rank the teams going into Sunday’s knockout rounds. In each age division, teams will compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals.

There should be some exciting matches, especially with 2013 medalists coming back in new age groups. Last year’s 14U girls champions Daneille Wood/Janelle Loewen have moved up to the 16U division and the 2013 16U girls silver and bronze medalists Darby Dunn/Tessa Neil and Nini Breukels/Tamara Clarke respectively are returning in the 18U division.

The event features multiple sponsors including Sport Canada, ViaSport, Vancouver Island University, RE7, Maui and Sons, Travel Roller, Wilson, and The Beach Club Resort. Sponsors will be set up at the beach to display products and provide samples to participants and attendees.

The 2014 Beach National Championships is a free, family-friendly sporting event and is open to the public. For those not able to attend the event, a live broadcast of feature court matches will be streamed online Saturday and Sunday.
