Beach and Indoor Volleyball a big hit at the 2014 BC Summer Games

The 2014 BC Summer Games took place this past weekend July 17-20th in Nanaimo. The BC Summer Games is a multi-sport youth event that encompasses many summer sports all competing at the same time in a similar style as the Olympic Games. Athletes are separated onto teams that are made up from zones around BC. There are 8 zones that compete at the BC Summer Games. This year was unique to volleyball as it was the first year we had Zone 1 (Kootenays), Zone 7 (North West), and Zone 8 (Cariboo-North East) all send the full amount of beach volleyball teams (2 female teams and 2 male teams)!

Indoor and Beach Volleyball are held as two separate competitions. Athletes participating in the Indoor event are aged 15 years and under while athletes participating in the beach event are aged 17 and under. The BC Games volleyball matches featured extremely good competition which made for exciting battles between zones.

Volleyball BC would like to thank the BC Summer Games organizers who are the mastermind behind this large-scale sporting event as well as all of the Volunteers, Coaches, and Officials who help make this event possible. A special thank you and congratulations to all the athletes for showing exemplary skill and sportsmanship throughout the entire event!

A huge congratulations goes out to Matthew Armstrong, Tanner Lorenson, and Trent Monkman who received the Coast Capital Savings Athlete Bursary of $500 each. The coast capital bursary is intended to recognize athletes who have achieved in athletics and education, but more importantly go above and beyond in their communities through leadership and volunteer activities.
