July 6, 2014 (Vancouver, BC) – Two days of scattered rain showers were quickly forgotten as the sun came out on Sunday, providing ideal conditions for the final matches of the ClearlyContacts.ca Open pro beach volleyball tournament at Kits Beach. There was standing room only for the women’s and men’s semi-finals and finals as spectators crowded in to watch the teams face off on centre court.
In the women’s semi-finals, the Braun/Chow team defeated Sawatzky/Bateham while the McNamara twins defeated Cordonier/Allinger-Pezer. This set up an entertaining women’s final where the crowd was wowed by a display of hitting power from the young pros. The McNamara sisters were able to make the necessary plays to sweep the match in two games and take home the $3300 cash prize.
In the Men’s semi-finals, Binstock/Schachter defeated Plantinga/Wheelan and Krause/Russell defeated Lebourdais/Wiskar creating a BC vs Ontario final. Binstock/Schachter were able to consistently win key defensive battles at the net in the final match, getting the two wins and retaining their champions status.
Announcers Paul Mend and Sean Sanderson pumped up the crowds all weekend while the Donnelly Group and Granville Island Brewing helped quench attendee’s thirst with tasty beers and ciders in the beer garden.
ClearlyContacts.ca and 6 Pack Beach Volleyball did giveaways on centre court, and one of the most popular contests of the weekend was the skyball competition where members of the audience got to show off their skills in front of the crowd. In addition to the pro event, Volleyball BC also ran a youth tournament where the young athletes were able to play on courts right next to the pros.
Volleyball BC would like to thank all of the players, officials, volunteers, sponsors, and spectators who took part in this weekend’s event and we look forward to another successful ClearlyContacts.ca Open in 2015.
