Richey wins Canada West Female Athlete of the Week award
UBC’s Kyla Richey has been named the Canada West’s Female Athlete of the Week. The fifth year outside hitter lead her CIS top-ranked UBC Thunderbirds women’s volleyball team (13-1) to two straight home wins over the #5 Manitoba Bisons (9-5) on the weekend with two solid performances. The native of Roberts Creek, BC recorded 15 kills and 10 digs in a three-set win on Friday night over the Bisons. On Saturday, Richey bettered that performance in a four-set victory. She recorded 20 kills, 11 digs, four service aces and seven block assists. Her game total of 27.5 points is tied for the third highest in a match in the Canada West this season. CIS #1 UBC (13-1) remains at the top of the Canada West standings. The men’s and women’s teams will visit No. 2 Winnipeg this weekend.
This weekend the UBCO Heat volleyball teams will be playing a pair of very meaningful matches as they face off against a University of Regina Cougars program that is sitting in a similar spot in the standings. The Heat teams have playoff hopes and they need to take out the Cougars at home this Friday and Saturday night.
The playoff hunt continues for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s volleyball team. The WolfPack will close out the home portion of their 2011-12 Canada West season this weekend (Jan 27-28) with matches against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The WolfPack have tied a school record with six wins (to go along with 10 losses). Saskatchewan sits in the basement of the Canada West as they are winless in 14 starts.
The #1 Trinity Western Spartan Men will travel to Manitoba to take on the Bisons this weekend. The Bisons swept UBC last weekend in Vancouver. The TWU women will try to extend their 5 game winning streak against Manitoba.
