No. 1 TWU Men Lose First Match of the Season
The No. 1 Trinity Western men’s volleyball team saw its quest for a perfect season come to an end as the Spartans fell 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-17) to the No. 2 Manitoba Bisons Friday. On Saturday TWU used the high-flying attack of Rudy Verhoeff and Steven Marshall and the record-breaking setting of Ben Ball, the earning a 3-0 (28-26, 26-24, 25-22) win over No. 2 Manitoba Saturday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
The #10 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen beat the #5 ranked UBC Thunderbirds in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-22) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg but the Thunderbirds broke a four-match losing streak on Saturday by sweeping the No. 10 Winnipeg Wesmen in straight sets on the road. The scores were: 25-21, 25-21, 25-18. “A much better effort tonight in all aspects of the game,” said UBC head coach Richard Schick. “Nice to see the guys respond after a non-showing last night. We have to continue to demand more from each other which I feel the guys did tonight.”
The UBC Okanagan Heat took down the University of Regina Cougars in 4 sets on Saturday night at UBC’s Okanagan campus gym (19-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-21). After tonight’s win the Heat move up to 5-11 for the season. On Friday the Heat defeated the Regina Cougars 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 15-6).
The home portion of the 2011-12 Canada West men’s volleyball season has ended for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack the same way it began: with a defeat. The WolfPack were swept in a weekend series by the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies. On Saturday (Jan 28), the Huskies beat the WolfPack 3-0. The scores were 25-17,25-18,25-21. TRU falls to 3-15 on the season-missing the playoffs season, only two games out of a playoff spot, while the Cougars drop to 4-12.
No. 1 UBC Women Hold Off Winnipeg
In a battle between the top two teams in the Canada West Conference standings, the #1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds defeated the #5 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 25-17) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. The No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds completed the weekend sweep on Saturday 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-16).
Led by Royal Richardson, with 13 kills, and Amy Leschied with 11 kills and three aces and some timely scoring the No. 3 Trinity Western women’s volleyball team defeated the No. 6 University of Manitoba Bisons 3-1 Friday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba by the scores of 25-22, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23. Trinity Western completed a weekend sweep of No. 6 Manitoba with a convincing 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-17) win Saturday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre. TWU now sits at 12-4 while the Bisons fall to 9-7.
The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s volleyball team sent their fans home happy and left a lasting positive image for their three fifth year players on Saturday (Jan 28). The WolfPack won their fourth straight match and school record eighth victory of the year in Canada West play. Thompson Rivers downed the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0. The scores at the Tournament Capital Centre were 25-22,25-20,25-20. TRU is now 8 and 10 on the season. Saskatchewan falls to 0-16.
The University of Regina Cougars defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat in three sets on Saturday night at UBC’s Okanagan campus gym (27-25, 25-22, 25-17). The Cougars used 20.5 team blocks to stymie the Heat’s bid for a fourth win with a five set victory (21-25, 25-18, 15-25, 25-22, 15-11). The Heat, coming out of an outstanding win last weekend against the nationally third ranked team, unfortunately couldn’t pull together to notch another win tonight as they were out-blocked 2:1, resulting in a tough ending to a tight match. The Cougars also lost Friday’s match 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-17).
